Bird Island

Bird Island, better known as Niao Island, is located in the North of the island of Penghu. Covering an area of 26.5 hectares, Bird Island is inhabited by people, who earn their livelihood by fishing.

Surrounded by a blue ocean, Bird Island has fine rows of basalt columns, which form high sea cliffs along its Eastern shore. The sea-eroded holes below the cliffs also have basalt columns, which form sprays like blossoming flowers.

Along the Northern shore is the weathered basalt, which has developed into the shape of an onion. Several sea birds fly above the island on all days. It is for this reason that the Niao Island is often referred to as the Bird Island.
