Penghu Weather

The climate of Penghu is mostly subtropical due to the Tropic of Cancer passing through the region. As an exception, the extreme Southern tip of the archipelago experiences a tropical climate. Penghu has hot summers, cold winters and strong winds, along with abundant rainfall.

Summers, beginning from April till October, are long and humid with the temperature ranging between 24° Celsius and 32° Celsius. On an average, the daily relative humidity during these months is 80%. The hottest months of the year are from June to August, when the temperature remains above 30° Celsius.

At the end of summer begins winter, which lasts from November till March. Short and usually mild, winter in Penghu witnesses an average temperature of not less than 16° Celsius in the lowlands. During the coldest months, particularly January and February, snowfall is also a common phenomenon, but only on the higher mountains.

Precipitation throughout the year ranges from 71 mm during summer to as low as 8 mm in winter. The rains are maximum during the summer months (6 to 9 days a month); however, it is rare in winter season (2 to 4 days a month). On an annual basis, the average rainfall is around 1,000 mm.

From October to March, the North-eastern winds blow at a high velocity of 9 metres per second, whilst bringing the sea water to islands in the form of 'salty rains'. On the other hand, the South-western winds mildly blow from June to October. It is during this time that the thunderstorms and typhoons frequently hit the islands.

Penghu's climate is at its best during the summer months. The best time to visit the archipelago is between the months of April and October. The temperature, during this period, is neither too low nor too high. With abundant rainfall, the winds also blow at low velocity during the peak tourist season.
