Phuentsholing is located on the Indian border along the Torsa River. It is the entry point to Bhutan and is about 180 km from the capital city of Thimpu. It is the second biggest town of Bhutan and shares its border with Jaigaon, an Indian town.
Phuentsholing is known as an affordable shopping destination. One can get items at much cheaper rates than in the capital city. There is only highway between Kolkata and Phuentsholing. It is the only highway via which people from India can reach Phuentsholing.
There is the flood plain of Torsa Chuu located on the western side of the town. Primarily a business town where Indians and Bhutanese do business, Phuentsholing has less sightseeing options as compared with other destinations in Bhutan. Some places to see here include the Crocodile Breeding Centre, the Bhutan Gate which is built in traditional Bhutanese style, the Karbandi Monastery and the Chukha Hydrothermal Project.
Unlike the rest of the country, Phuentsholing does not have many temples or fortresses.More commonly known as the Torsha River, Amo Chuu, is a popular spot with picnickers. A bulk of the trade with India is conducted through this town.
This town is also known for its scenic foothills and Bhutanese villages which have a touch of Indian culture and traditions.
