Nepal grants Visa on arrival to nationals of most of the countries. To apply for a visa on arrival, one needs a passport sized photograph and a complete application form. A transit visa is also available, if making an incidental journey to another country. To apply for a transit visa, proof of the onward journey is required.
The visa fee varies according to the length of stay applied for. The visa fee for transit visa is $5 while for a 15 day visa it is $25. The visa fee for a 30 day and a 90 day visa is approximately $40 and $100 respectively.
Nationals of SAARC countries are exempt from the visa fee but they need to pay the fee in case of an extension.
Visa to Nepal can also be applied for at the Embassy of Nepal.
Indian travellers do not require a visa to travel to Nepal. They require an identity proof and a passport sized photograph, measuring 3.5x4.5 cm on a white background which needs to be produced at the time of immigration check. While applying for a visa at the Kathmandu Airport, one needs US dollars as other currencies are not accepted. An extra surcharge of 25% is applicable on the visa fee if applying at the Kathmandu Airport.
Children below 10 years are exempt from the visa fee. The visa is valid for travelling to Kathmandu, Chitwan Park, Pokhara and other places of the country connected by road. However, for trekking, special permits are needed apart from the visa.
To apply for a visa, one needs a passport which is valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure, along with a recent passport sized photograph and the visa application form duly filled up, apart from the visa fee, depending on the length of the stay.
The visa is valid up to six months from the date of issue and can be extended by a period of 30-120 days from the Central Immigration Office of Nepal, located at Bhrikuti Mandap. The office is open from 10 am to 5 pm. There is a passport photograph facility available near the immigration desk. It takes about 24 hours to process the visa request if applying in person and if applying by post, it takes about a week.
