Czech National Museum

The Czech National Museum was founded by Kaspar Maria Sternberg in 1818. Established with the intent to systematically establish, prepare and publicly exhibit natural scientific and historical collections, it is home to almost 14 million items from the area of natural history, history, arts, music and librarianship.

The largest and oldest museum in the Czech Republic, it lies at the top of Wenceslas Square, behind the statue of St. Wenceslas on his horse. In addition to housing several floors of permanent exhibits, the museum also runs a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Designed by Josef Schultz, the neo-renaissance building of the museum is an architectural symbol of the Czech National Revival. Constructed between the years 1818 to 1891 on the site of the former Horse Gate, it is a dark building that lies near the site that was the parliament of Czechoslovakia during the communist era.

Staircases and stonework adorn the entrance hall of the museum. The primeval history of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, and Mineralogical & petrological collections are permanent exhibits of the museum.

Other permanent exhibits of the museum include Zoological, Palaeontological and Anthropological collections. The museum also contains a collection of stuffed animals like bears and tigers. The museum is also home to reconstructions of extinct animals, such as an enormous mammoth and a gigantic emu like bird that once roamed New Zealand.
