Pura Petitenget is a temple located at the T-junction on Jalan Petitenget. This temple is believed to be one of the nine pillars, known as Kayangan Jagat. Built in the 11th century, the temple was constructed by a Javanese Sage, Empu Kuturan.
Empu Kuturan was the one who introduced religious laws in the land and lead to establishment of traditional villages in Bali. It was believed that the temple protects the island from southern threats.
The temple is also sometimes referred to as the Temple of the Secret Box. The temple got this name when a holy man from Java came to the island to teach the Balinese community about good manners.
Along with him, he brought a box which he accidentally left behind while returning to Java. The box was never touched or opened by anyone, and it was decided by the Balinese people to build a temple around it.
