About Sentosa
Pulau seluas 5 kilometer persegi di Singapura itu sebelumnya dikenal dengan nama Pulau Blakang Mati, dalam Melayu berarti damai dan sentosa. Pulau Sentosa adalah pulau keempat terbesar di Singapura. Masyarakatnya merupakan percampuran antara Melayu, China, India, Arab, dan beberapa kebudayaan lain.
Wilayah Sentosa sebagian besar berupa hutan hujan sekunder dan pasir putih. Belantaranya merupakan habitat bagi biawak, monyet, merak, burung beo, dan flora fauna lain.
Pulau Sentosa memiliki peranan taktis selama abad ke-19. Pulau tersebut mengawal lintasan menuju Pelabuhan Keppel. Sejumlah fortifikasi yang dibangun di pulau tersebut antara lain Benteng Siloso, Benteng Serapong, Benteng Connaught, dan Meriam Gunung Imbiah. Semuanya dipakai untuk melindungi stok batu bara dari serangan musuh.
Pada dekade 1930-an, Sentosa beralih fungsi menjadi pangkalan Royal Artillery. Dan, selama Perang Dunia II pulau tersebut dijadikan kubu pertahanan oleh militer Inggris.
Setelah tentara Sekutu menyerah pada 1942, Sentosa menjadi kamp tahanan perang Jepang untuk para tahanan asal Australia dan Inggris. Kemudian Jepang menyerah pada 1945 dan Sentosa menjadi pangkalan tamtama lokal Regimen I Singapura, bagian dari Royal Artillery.
Pada 1967, Inggris menyerahkan Pulau Sentosa kepada Angkatan Bersenjata Pemerintah Singapura. Setelah itu, Singapura membangun pulau tersebut menjadi resor liburan bagi wisatawan lokal dan mancanegara. Nama pulau berganti menjadi Sentosa di tahun 1972.
Taman hiburan pertama di Asia Tenggara dibangun di pulau tersebut. Pasir impor di pantainya menghampar hingga 3,2 kilometer. Dan di Singapura, hanya di tempat inilah minuman keras dilegalkan.
Sebagai destinasi wisata yang populer, pulau tersebut merupakan tuan rumah dari berbagai festival dan acara. Konser pop dan konser budaya, even olah raga internasional, festival nasional, pesta pantai, festival dansa, karnaval pantai, pesta malam tahun baru, dan pertunjukkan patung pasir raksasa digelar di Sentosa.
Waktu kunjungan terbaik ke Sentosa ialah antara Juni dan Agustus, sebab selama periode tersebut iklimnya menyenangkan dan bunga-bunga bermekaran. Adapun, para pecinta wisata pantai bisa berkunjung ke pulau tersebut sepanjang tahun.

For anyone who has covered Sentosa Islands as comprehensively as possible, could you please guide me on a few queries…
1) I have short-listed the following to save time and money. But am I missing anything really worthwhile from the above mentioned rides/shows/attractions?
2) Would I be able to cover all this within one day? Will it he a rush-n-run experience?
3) Do I need to go for advance booking for any of these rides? I plan to visit in Apr-May 2012… is that peak period?
4) What kind of transport is available within Sentosa to go from one attraction point to other? Are they really far-away from each other? Are there any shuttle services and how much would it cost? I don’t have personal transport…
5) What are the best economical pure veg food options within Sentosa?
6) Finally, how much would I compromise on the fun if I take along my 2-yr son, since I guess kids are not allowed on most rides?
