The official currency of Cambodia is Riel but the currency that is widely used in the region is the US Dollar. Riel notes are available in denominations of 100,000; 50,000; 10,000; 5000; 2000, 1000, 500; 100 and 50. 1 US Dollar is equivalent to around 4000 Riels.
Most shops and hotels accept major credit cards like MasterCard and Visa. ATMs are distributed throughout the city but charge a fee of US $2 to US $4 for every transaction. Cash withdrawals by credit cards also involve a charge of 2% to 4%. Also, travellers’ cheques are exchanged against a fee of 2%.
Banks provide currency exchange services. Some of the banks provide the option of telegraphic transfers and Instant cash transfers. Banks usually operate from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 3 pm. Some banks also operate on Saturdays from 8 am to 11.30 am.
Tips are very well accepted by the tourist and service industry for which small changes of US Dollars are required. Enough US dollars must be carried as most of the daily transactions take place only in cash. It must be noted that slightly torn US Dollar notes are not accepted by banks and other places.
Siem Reap is filled with roadside money changers who offer better rates than banks.
