| Chinatown |
|
Chinatown is an ethnic Chinese locality in Singapore full of Chinese eateries, bakeries, tea-houses, bars and hawker stalls. The Hotel 1929 in this area, has rare photographs and furniture from ages ago.
From Wang Duyan’s 14th century writings, it is clear that Singapore’s Chinatown is the oldest in the world. Not long after 1819, Singapore became crowded and the thronging continued until 1960 when many of the residents were made to shift to houses in other parts of the city.
The architecture in Chinatown is an interesting mixture of Victorian, Oriental and Italian styles. Pastel shades and slits for windows are seen in all houses in some parts of Chinatown.
