Train
MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and LRT (Light Rail Transit) are operational railway networks in Singapore. The MRT network has 79 stations and spans North South Line, which runs from Marina Bay Station to Jurong East Station, via Woodlands Station. Other lines include the East West Line, which runs from Pasir Ris Station to Joo Koon Station and the Circle Line, which operates between Dhoby Ghaut Station and Marymount Station.

The MRT service starts daily from 5:30 am and extends till 1 am. The frequency of these trains is approximately three to eight minutes. LED, general ticketing machines (gtms), a passenger service centre and plasma displays that show train service information and announcements are the facilities available at the stations.

The North East Line connects Dhoby Ghaut Station, Outram Park Station and Serangoon Station. To visit Singapore Expo Centre or Singapore Changi Airport, one can board Singapore Changi Airport Express from Tanah Merah Station. Retail shops and kiosks, supermarkets and convenience stores are present at all the stations.

LRT is a modern and convenient feeder service that covers 7.8 km of elevated guideways. It spans 14 stations located between Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang estates. Touch screen actile guidance system, toilets for disabled, lifts and ramps are available at all the stations in the LRT network.

Bus
SBS Transit and SMRT Corporation are the main bus companies operating in Singapore. The buses ply on the dedicated routes like Trunk (between towns), Intra-Town (SMRT Buses) and TownLink (SBS Transit).

Buses in Singapore include Night Rider (SMRT Buses) and Nite Owl (SBS Transit) and Jurong Industrial Service, among others. Buses ply on their routes from 7 am to 10 pm daily, except on Sundays and public holidays, at an interval of 20 minutes.

Taxi
Taxicabs are another mode of transport in Singapore that can be availed from major taxi stands, like Marina Bay Sands, Anson Road (between Maxwell Road and Parsi Road), Battery Road, Cecil Street and Cairnhill Road.

Additionally, Rochor Canal Road (between Bencoolen Street and Selegie Road) and D'Almeida Street are some of the other popular taxi stands in Singapore. On some streets, taxis ply from Monday to Friday from 7.30 am to 6.00 pm. The taxis operate on Saturday from 7.30 am to 2.00 pm. At some places, taxis operate round the clock.

Other
Trishaws are three-wheeled bicycle taxis that can be boarded from Singapore River and Chinatown. Besides, bumboats are popular with tourists, for cruising on the Singapore River. The cruise starts at Clarke Quay, and these bumboats arrive and depart every 10 minutes.

Bikes can be rented for travelling within the city; however, dedicated bike lanes or bike tracks are not present. Most tourists prefer to rent small folding bicycles from MRT stations. Bikes are a preferred option to cross the Causeway to Malaysia (on motorbike lanes).

  Singapore with Star Cruise...
I am planning a Singapore trip with 3-nights on ‘Star Cruise Virgo’ (Singapore-Phuket-Penang) with my wife and 2-year-old son. For anyone who has been on the cruise, could you please guide me on a few queries… 1.) How different is the experience between the ‘balcony room’, ‘porthole window room’ and ‘inside stateroom’ on the cruise? Am I missing too much if I don’t opt for the balcony room? Wanted to be very sure because there’s a huge difference between the room tariff – around Rs 16000 per person (SGD 400) 2.) Are there decent vegetarian food options on cruise? Is Indian cuisine available or am I asking for too much? 3.) Are the land excursions (in Phuket and Penang) organized by Star Cruise worth going for? 4.) What are the non-operational dates of cruise due to monsoon or bad weather? I plan my tour in April or May 2012. 5.) Finally what are the entertainment options aboard cruise? Any thing in particular that I shouldn’t miss… Would really appreciate genuine feedback. Thanks in advance :) Regards, Gaurav
Jurong Bird Park and Night Safari
Anyone who has been to the 'Jurong Bird Park' in Singapore... can you please guide me on a few queries - Should I see the bird park on 'panorail' (I've a 2 year old kid) or exploring on foot would be more interesting? - Do I need to take the 'guided tours' in Bird Park or going by myself is sufficient? (The guided tours are damn expensive at $25 per person) - If I go for 'Night Safari', would I miss something if I don't go to the 'Zoo'? - How far is the 'Night Safari' park from the 'Bird Park'? What is the mode of transport and how much would it cost? - Any other things I shouldn't be missing at the 'Bird Park' or 'Night Safari'... pls do let me know. Would really appreciate genuine feedback. Thanks in advance :) - Gaurav
