Seven international airports serve South Korea, out of which, the airport serving the city of Seoul is the major international gateway. Airports of Busan, Cheongju, Daegu, Jeju and Muan also serve international as well as domestic flights.
Incheon International Airport that is located about 70 km west of Seoul is the largest and busiest airport in the country. Serving 30,000,000 passengers per year, this airport is the eleventh busiest airport in the world. This airport is the hub of Korean Air, Asiana Airlines and Polar Air Cargo.
The second largest and the busiest airport in South Korea is Gimpo International Airport. Located in the Seoul National Capital Area, this airport serves as the hub of Asiana Airlines and Korean Air.
Jeju International Airport is the third busiest airport in the country. It serves several domestic flights within the country, along with international flights to China, Japan, and Taiwan.
Located at the western end of Busan, Gimhae International Airport is the fourth busiest airport in the country. The airport is the hub of Air Busan. The fifth busiest airport in the country is Gwangju Airport that serves the city of Gwangju. Daegu Airport, Cheongju Airport and Ulsan Airport are the sixth, seventh and eighth busiest airports in the country, respectively.
Main Airports in South Korea
Serving the Seoul National Capital Area, Incheon International Airport is the main international airport in the country. It has two terminals, one main terminal and the other concourse A terminal.
This airport serves 70 airlines, out of which Korean Air is the largest carrier. The main terminal serves flights operated by Korean Air, Asiana Air, Jin Air, Eastar Jet and Jeju Air. All the other airlines are served by concourse A.
Both the terminals of this airport are located in a single building and are connected by the Airport Transportation Centre. Railroad connects this airport to the Gimpo International Airport. It also links the airport to the Seoul Subway Line 5 and Line 9. Ferry service from Incheon runs till Yeongjong-do.
The second largest airport of the country, Gimpo International Airport is another main airport. Banks, ATMs, money changers and coffee shops can be found throughout the arrival and departure points. One can also find information desk, Internet Service counter and KAC VIP room at the airport.
Jeju International Airport is the third busiest airport in South Korea. Airport buses operating at an interval of 10 minutes connect the airport to the city centre. Gimhae International Airport, the fourth largest airport in the country, has separate domestic and international arrivals.
Airlines in South Korea
The official carrier of South Korea is Korean Air, which is not only the flag carrier but also the largest airline of the country. It serves around 130 cities in 45 countries along with 20 domestic destinations.
The hub of this airline is Incheon International Airport. Secondary hubs of this airline are Jeju International Airport, Jeju and Gimhae International Airport, Busan.
Another major airline of the country is Asiana Airlines that is based at Asiana Town in Osoe-dong, Gangseo-gu, and Seoul. Incheon International Airport serves as the international hub for this airline, whereas, Gimpo International Airport is its domestic hub.
Other than the two major airlines, several low-cost regional airlines also serve the country like Hansung Airlines (Seoul), Eastar Jet (Seoul) and Air Busan (Busan). Jeju Air (Jeju City), Jin Air (Seoul) and Yeongnam Air (Busan) are other South Korean airlines.
Several international airlines like Aeroflot, Air Canada, Cathay Pacific Airways, Japan Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines also serve South Korea. Lufthansa Airlines, Qantas Airways, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and United Airlines are among the other international airlines serving the country.
