The currency used in Taipei is the New Taiwan Dollar, which is symbolised as NT$. It is  the official currency of Taiwan. Banknotes are available in denominations of NT$2000, NT$1000, NT$500, NT$200 and NT$100. Denominations of available coins are NT$50, NT$20, NT$10, NT$5 and NT$1.

Other currencies that are accepted in Taipei are US Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen and Pound Sterling. There is no restriction on the amount of foreign currency that can be brought inside Taipei.

The amount of currency brought needs to be declared on arrival, in writing. When leaving the country, tourists can take banknotes having total value equivalent to 2,26,747.08 INR.

Tourists can get the foreign currency exchanged in all the banks that are authorised by the government. Some of the major banks in Taipei are Bank of Taiwan, Land Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan Cooperative Bank, First Commercial Bank, Hua Nan Commercial Bank and Citibank.

From Monday to Friday, banks in Taipei do business from 9 am to 3.30 pm. One can also get the foreign currency exchanged from the bank on Saturdays from 9 am to 12 noon.

Taipei is dotted with ATMs of all the major banks. Credit cards like American Express, Master Card, Visa and Diners Club can be used for monetary transactions. Travellers' cheques such as, American Express, Citibank and Thomas Cook are also accepted at banks and international hotels.

One can find Forex changers at the international airport, departmental stores and banks. All the money changers charge service charge on every exchange. The cheapest service charge is at the airport.
The Bank of Taiwan has installed Foreign Exchange ATMs at its sales department branches, for the convenience of tourists. One can withdraw small foreign exchange from these.

With minimum cases of pick-pocketing and purse snatching, Taipei is a safe place to travel. Although Taipei has numerous ATMs and banks, it is better to carry some cash.
