Auckland International airport is located 353 km away from Turangi, which is the nearest town to the park. The airport serves both, domestic as well as international travellers. There is a free shuttle service between the domestic and the international terminal, which runs every 20 minutes.
The airport has business and conferencing facilities along with VIP lounges, laptop ports and wireless internet access. Banks are also available at the airport which provide currency exchange services. ATMs can be found throughout the airport.
The airport has many restaurants, bars and cafes offering Asian and continental cuisine along with a number of duty free shops. There is a left luggage facility as well as facilities for the disabled like wheelchair assistance, lifts, accessible toilets etc.
There are bus services available from outside the airport. Airbus plies buses from the airport to the city centre, while Maxx is an operator which plies buses to the main city and other neighbouring destinations.
From Auckland International Airport, one can rent a car and travel along state highway 1 to Hamilton. From Hamilton, one has to take the National Highway Four and follow the directions to reach Tongariro National Park. Various car rental companies are available outside the airport.
One can also take the Tranz Scenic Train from the airport to the park. One has to take the train travelling to Wellington and get down at the Tongariro National Park station. The train departs everyday at 7:25 am and it takes about 6 hours to reach the park.
There is also the Intercity Coachline for travelling from Auckland to the National Park. The bus departs at 2:50 pm daily except Saturdays.
