Things to do in Tongariro National Park mainly comprise of adventure activities. Hiking and trekking are popular in the summer months while snowboarding and skiing are popular during the winter months.
One can also go hunting, fishing or mountain biking in the region. Hunting is legal in the area; however, one must have requisite permission before going hunting.
The place is also well known for the locations where Lord of the Rings movie was shot. Tours are regularly organised to those spots.
There are several walking tracks in the region which one can choose from. The most well known of these tracks is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It is a part of the 9 great walks of New Zealand.
Mount Ruapehu has several tramping trails in the region. One can also visit the village of Wahakapapa here which is the highest settlement in New Zealand with permanent residents.
