Trincomalee is a port which lies on the eastern coast of the country. There are various things to do in Trincomalee. Among the sightseeing options, the most well known is the Fort Frederick. The fort was established by the Portuguese and changed hands several times before coming under British ascendancy. Though still in use by the military, one can explore it to see the few colonial buildings still standing.
There is also the Swami Rock which offers views of the entire port. The Shaivite temple of Koneswaram Kovil is another sightseeing option. The temple is considered to be the holiest temple in Trincomalee.
Another sightseeing option in Trincomalee is the ruins of Velgam Vihara. The Vihara was built in 1st AD. There are the ruins of Buddha statues as well as various other structures.
The main tourist attraction of this port city is the beaches. It lies close to Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches, which offer surfing, scuba diving and fishing and whale watching. The Pigeon Island close by is well known for snorkelling.
