Owing to extensive immigration in the 18th and 19th centuries from Central, Southern and Eastern Europe and also from China, the regional Canadian cuisine shows varied influences. Poutine and butter tarts are the most well-known local foods.
Izakayas, or Japanese-style tapas, rappie pie, pierogis, pâté chinois, and roast turkey are popular delicacies in the city. Mussels, oysters, cedar-plank salmon, Dungeness crab, prawns or any other form of Pacific Northwest seafood are widely available. New York-style hot-dogs served with seaweed and okonomiyaki sauce is a popular street food of Vancouver.
Vancouver's Greektown, on West Broadway in the Kitsilano neighbourhood across English Bay from downtown is home to many cafés and eateries serving keftedes (meatballs), spanakopita (spinach and cheese in phyllo dough) and souvlaki (skewers). At the eateries in Kitsilano, food lovers can savour saganaki, pear-almond tart and chocolate truffles with fillings from conventional caramel to outré lime-cachaça.
The South Granville neighbourhood has many Indian restaurants serving traditional Indian cuisine. At these eateries, one can have cauliflower, spinach, onion and potato pakoras with dal and mango chutney, and with lamb in cumin and a light cream curry. Rice pudding, omelets, moules frites, steak frites and poutine are other favourites of the destination.
Granville Island contains eateries serving fish tacos, green-lip mussels in lemon-garlic sauce, marinated octopus and seaweed salad. Lonsdale Quay Market contains eateries serving a variety of seafood like ebi-mayo (tempura-fried prawns in mayonnaise) and beef tongue. At False Creek, and Granville Island Public Market pirogis, sushi, German sausages, double-wide pizza slices and fresh pressed juice are available.
Karaage (fried boneless chicken), yakitori (chicken skewers), gyoza dumplings and butter-broiled asari are other popular dishes of the destination. In Vancouver, Korean delicacies like Soju, kalbi, bulgogi, and banchan are also available. At the eateries, tourists can also taste sweet or savoury pannekoeken from the Netherlands, bratwurst or Kurobuta pork sausages, terimayo, sakana and korokke.
