Wadi Rum is a land valley and sandstone mountains rising out of the sand. It is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock. Mountains of sandstone and granite rising vertically out of the pink desert, towering cliffs of weathered stone, canyons, and ancient rock drawings attract tourists in this desert valley.
Lawrence's Spring, Sand Dunes, Rock Bridge, Alameleh Inscriptions, the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Anfashieh Inscriptions and Nabataean Temple are some of the major sightseeing spots in the valley.
Visitors can trail along Lawrence's way to Aqaba through the mountains to learn about the heritage of this ancient desert valley. One can visit the Rum Arts and the adjacent Bedouin Gallery to purchase traditional souvenirs.
The most popular activities in the desert valley are climbing and hiking. Tourists are attracted to the valley for its granite and sandstone cliff, which offer ample opportunities for hiking and trekking. Jabal Rum, Jordan's highest mountain is popular amongst the climbers.
Hikers can enjoy the vast empty spaces throughout the protected area. One can experience the silence and grandeur of the landscape, while exploring the desert on foot. Visitors can try hikes such as the Rock Bridge of Burdah. Nature lovers can witness numerous flora and fauna in their natural habitats.
One can venture into the Rum through the Visitors' Centre that is located opposite the mountain called the Seven Pillars of Wisdom. The tour starts from here and an entrance fee is charged.
At the Visitors' Centre, tourists can buy Rum Arts and silver items as well as embroidered bags. Having a traditionally cooked chicken or lamb meal in the desert is another attraction. |
