Owing to the diversity in geography and ecosystems in Washington, D.C, there are ample opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, skiing and golf.   

For adventure lovers, Mount Baker, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens offer climbing opportunities. The city also has several hiking and trekking trails in Rock Creek Park, which are popular among hikers. Washington Monument State Park, Shenandoah National Park and Gathland State Park are among other hiking and trekking trails.

With several lakes and rivers flowing across the city, there are opportunities for indulging in water activities like snorkelling, windsurfing and swimming. Edmonds Oil Dock and Lake Chelan are popular spots that are frequented by water sports lovers. Other water activities that can be enjoyed in the city are scuba diving, kite-surfing and parasailing.

Golf can be played in the three public golf courses within the city. East Potomac Golf Course, Langston Golf Course and Rock Creek Golf Course are the public golf courses, which are open daily from morning till evening.

With three horse racing tracks in the city, horse racing is also a popular leisure activity in Washington, D.C. Tourists can either try or see the sport at Laurel Park, Pimlico Race Course and Roescroft Raceway.  Boating, kayaking, rafting and skiing are among the other activities.
