Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. It is also known as the art and culture capital of the country. The approximate population of Wellington is about 423,800, squeezed into an area of 290 square km.
The city of Wellington is small and compact, and one can walk from one end of the city to another in just 20 minutes. It lies in the extreme south of the North Island of New Zealand.
The city is named after the first duke of the place - Arthur Wellesley. There are a lot of places one can explore in Wellington like wildlife sanctuaries, beaches, and parks.
Wellington used to be called Te Upoko o te lka a maui, which means ‘the head of Maui’ fish”. It got this name from the fable that a navigator named Maui fished up the city.
Wellington has many museums, boutique shops and art galleries which one can explore. The Te Papa Tongrewa on the waterfront is a popular museum in Wellington. The city is also known for its theatre, dance performances and various art festivals.
The city has an international airport and a robust bus network which makes travelling within very easy. The airport has direct flights from most of the major cities in the world.
Among the sightseeing options available in the city, apart from the Te Papa museum, there is the Colonial Cottage, which is the oldest building in the region, the Majestic Centre, which is the tallest building in the region and the Futuna Chapel, which is the first bicultural building in New Zealand.
