| About Xiamen-CN |
Xiamen is located in the Fujian province of China. It started to serve as a European trade port in 1541 and continued to become a main port of China for exporting tea during the 19th century.
Xiamen is located along the coastline of south eastern China, almost 50 km southwest of Quanzhou. Being a Special Economic Zone it has a separate authority over economic matters.
Xiamen includes the Xiamen Island on which the Huli and Siming districts are located. The cities of Haicang, Jimei, Tong'an, Xiang'an and other townships surrounding them are part of Xiamen too. The island is linked to the mainland through a series of bridges to the north and west of it.
The city has a population of around 1,372,000 and is situated at an altitude of 456 feet. Average temperature during summer and winter are 28⁰ Celsius and 13⁰ Celsius respectively. The city receives about 46 inches of rainfall per year.
Xiamen has an ancient past that associates its port status with the Song and Ming Dynasty. Records of Xiamen have been found during the reign of the Taikang ruler Wu Di of Western Jin Dynasty. The place was then regarded as the Tong'an County and later become a part of Nan'an County. It was again renamed Tong'an during the Tang Dynasty as a Quanzhou Prefecture.
Previously a fishing village, Xiamen cropped up as a port city during the Ming Dynasty. The port of Xiamen was the first Chinese port during the Ming period to be used for foreign trade. It also opened Xiamen to foreign missionaries and gave way to the Christian Protestantism in China.
Xiamen served as the unofficial foreign trading centre for spices and silk to willing foreign governments of Portugal, Holland and Spain prior to escalation of trade conflict between China and Britain. Many Chinese traders built large consulates, mansions and churches on the Xiamen Island. Shipbuilding, chemical production, telecommunications, machine tool manufacturing, food processing, tanning and textile fabrication are the basic industries in Xiamen.
Xiamen is also considered worldwide as the National Model City for Environmental Protection, the National Garden City, the National Sanitary City, China's most liveable city and the National Excellent Tourist City.
The city is well connected through flights that operate between the Xiamen-Gaogi International Airport and various other destinations in China and the rest of Asia. There are regular flights to cities like Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Nagoya, Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong and others.
