The Drum Tower is the sister tower of the Bell Tower and the only ancient architectural work, which is similar to this tower among the attractions in Xian. It is situated towards the northern side of West Avenue and faces the Bell Tower.
The tower derived its name because initially there was a drum, known as the Wentian Drum, placed in the tower. It was originally built at the time of the Ming Dynasty long back in 1380. It is a two-storied building with a triple roof and a winding corridor.
It rises up from a rectangular brick base, which is placed under a curved archway. Grey tiles are used to cover the roof, while the edges are trimmed with tiles with green glaze. Wooden tenon and cottar joints are used instead of nails, which characterises the scientific corbel construction style, and gives the tower an elegant look.
