The forest of Steles is located just inside the southern city wall, close to the Wenchang Gate. It houses a collection of 2,300 stone tablets and epitaphs, which is the biggest and oldest of its type in the nation. It includes the popular Nestorian Stele, which dates back to the 7th century, and illustrates the coming of Nestorian Christianity to the country.
