Giwangan is the most important bus stop in Yogyakarta and is located around 5 km from the centre of the city towards the southeast. Various cities on the island of Java such as Solo, Semarang, Surabaya, Jakarta and Badung are connected to Yogyakarta through regular bus services.
The journeys to Surabaya, Jakarta and Badung take 8 hours, 9 hours and 6 hours respectively. Air conditioned as well as normal buses are available for travelling from one part of Java Island to another. Bus services are also available to Bali. Some of the buses to Bali have toilets on board.
One can purchase bus tickets for a lesser price at the bus terminal. Tickets can also be purchased from local ticket agents whose offices can be found along Jalan Sosrowijayan, Jalan Mangkubumi, Jalan Prawirotaman or near Kartika Trekking.
These agents sometimes offer to pick up guests from their hotels. It is important to inquire about the prices from more than one agent as some take a lot of commission.
There are local buses that help tourists commute to the nearby areas of Borobudur, Imogiri, Prambanan, Parangtritis and Kaliurang, to name a few.
