Yogyakarta is one of the oldest cites of Indonesia and is dotted with numerous heritage buildings and monuments. Serving as a gateway to Central Java, the city is a popular tourist destination.
Established in the year 1755, the city has numerous historical and heritage sights like Greater Kraton Compound and Taman Sari. The former is the palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta and the latter is the water castle.
The city also has several monuments and landmarks like Tugu Monument and Benteng Vredeburg that stand as witness of prime historical events.
Tourists can spend the entire day browsing through the rare and unique collection kept in numerous museums. Some of the famous museums of the city are Museum Dirgantara Yogyakarta, Sonobudoyo Museum, Kekayon Museum and Affandi Museum.
One can also visit Central Museum Yogyakarta, Museum Sasana Wiratama and Sasmitaloka Museum. Another popular tourist attraction in the city is the Kota Gede, which stands as a witness to the rise of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom.
