Zhuhai lies on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary along the shore of the South China Sea. Hong Kong and Shenzhen are located across the sea to the east of Zhuhai while Guangdong Province is 140 km to the north of this Chinese city.
It covers 7640 square kilometres, comprising 1640 square kilometres area of land. The city has a population of 141.57 million. Zhuhai is one of the largest Chinese economic zones. Its municipal government located in the Xiangzhou District also has the Jinwan District the Xiangzhou District and the Doumen District under its jurisdiction.
The city has been inhabited over a period of 5000 years since the Neolithic Age. The current city area was under the reign of the Qin Dynasty from 221 B.C to 206 B.C. The Zhuhai City came into existence in 1979.
Zhuhai City was acknowledged as one of the top 40 tourist destinations of China in the 1990s. It was also awarded the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment in 1998.
