Planning a visit to Egypt preferably without tour operators - any suggestions re - 1. Abu Simbel - how far from Aswan and how long the trip takes? 2. Alexandria - time needed and things to see? 3. Cairo - how long does the Museum take if properly seen and how interesting is the Citadel and how long does it take to visit+ see? 4. Is it true that all bus/car excursions - say from Cairo to Alexandria or Cairo to Red Sea Resort towns or Aswan to Abu Simbel- are escorted in groups by police/security force?
1. It is around 3.5 hours by bus from Abu Simbel to Aswan- you can also fly from Cairo to Abu Simbel usually stop-over at Aswan or Luxor. Trains are also good and much cheaper. 2. There are so many place and things to see in Alexandria . I suggest you do a search for all the things and decide on wat u want to see depending on the time available. I think you will ned atleast 2-3 full days. 3. The Cairo Museum is HUGE. It is said that if one has to spend 1 minute in front of every thing there , It will take 6 years to see ethg ! Instead- select the top 10-15 things from the Museum catelogue and guide books and visit taht if u are short of time.Citadel is a must see and even if you hurry, it needs atleast a few hours/ half a day
