When we booked our flight tikets to Thiruvananthapuram enroute to Poovar, it was simply because it was the nearest city to which flights were available. We had a day in hand, due to ticket availabilty problems, and while my husbad just wanted to catch up on some much needed sleep, all I wanted to see was the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Our expectations from the city weren't too great, which is probably why the city was a real surprise to us. Our first view of the city was from the air, a stunning melange of the clear blue of the sea, the light brown of the sand, and the bright green of the palm trees, extending as far as our eyes could see. Add this to the simple beauty of the airport itself, built in the traditional Kerala style, and I was happy to have arrived. The city itself was a wonderful fusion of the old and the new, with most of the city still retaining the original Kerala architecture, with quite a bit of greenery around every house, while the modernity is very visible too, with numerous residential complexes coming up, especially in the suburbs. But what I shall forever remember about this city is the sight of women driving autos and running petrol pumps all by themselves. Truly liberation of women from the usual sterotypes!!! The room was good, and the concept of building the hotel units amongst the pools and rivulets which are part of the backwaters was unique as well as interesting. My 6 year old son spent hours everyday looking at the fishes and crabs in the water, and the birds which arrived to drink water in a small pool of water near our room, not to mention butterflies and lizards too! He was absolutely fascinated by the trolleys for luggage and insisted on pushing it himself to the lift and then the room. Check in was as quick and effortless as promised in the ads, and the staff were also extremely helpful. More » « Hide

A little known island in the God's own country of Kerala, this small island is fast becoming a popular tourist destination. And why not! It has all a nature loving traveller will want - the river Neyyar empties into the sea here, and the estuary has the unique distinction of bringing together the river, the sea, the backwaters, a beach, as well as a few lakes, all at one place.
