I had gone through some of the photos which showed what Dubai was like 10 years ago and what I could see is that development here has taken place in a jiffy!! Right from the tallest building in the world to the biggest mall and biggest aquarium, Dubai has it all. A city that has to be visited by every traveler at least once in their lifetime. This was my first visit to Sri Lanka and after spending the previous night in Colombo, we decided to go to Kandy and booked the Majestic Tourist Hotel online after reading reviews and seeing that it was a budget hotel with decent reviews. On seeing the hotel we were kind of horrified. It had a very distasteful abandoned look from the outside. After a couple of minutes of discussion, we decided to just take a look at it and decide if we should stay here or not. As soon as we entered the hotel, two boys came running and offered to carry our luggage and took us to the owner. While waiting for the owner, we saw that the inside of the hotel was not bad at all. Very well maintained and clean. After taking a look at a couple of rooms, we decided that the place was not bad at all. The owner (Mr.Joseph - who is from Kerala - and that tells me that we Malayalees are all over the world in every known profession. Did not expect a hotel owner in Kandy to be a Mal :P) was a very friendly person. A very soft spoken, yet informative individual. We checked into our room and proceeded to the roof top restaurant to have some really nice Sri Lankan tea where we had an in depth conversation with regards to Sri Lanka and its people with Mr.Joseph. Overall the hotel is good for a budget traveller visiting Kandy. It is about 1.6 kilometres from the Kandy lake and a little over 2 kilometres to the Temple of the Tooth. Either ways Kandy is a very small town and you can access all the main sightseeing spots by foot (we did). The service provided by the people working here is awesome. They try and accommodate every need that you might have with a smile. Hats off to them for that. In this trip, which went on for 8 days, my taste buds really did not agree to the Sri Lankan cuisine. I love spicy food, but to these guys, extremely spicy is normal. The food I had from a restaurant in the city had me breathing fire all over the place. The next day, I had lunch at the hotel and that was the best meal I had in the whole trip. Devilled Chicken curry with Rice followed by a fruit salad with ice cream. The curry and rice was awesome. Really loved it. If you're planning to go here, order this, inform them that you don't want it to be too spicy. There are no activities as such at the hotel. But they do organise sight seeing trips for guests around the Cultural Triangle Area (Anuradhapura, Dambulla, Sigiriya etc) and of course, Kandy too. Another aspect is that you can access the internet through WiFi and this is a free service provided by the hotel. Apart from that, important info that travellers to Kandy would need is as below: Tuk Tuks - you can avoid using them unless it is an absolute emergency. It is expensive and hardly any of them have meters. Night life - Almost zero. Almost everything closes by 8. Entry Fees - Everywhere. Temple of the Tooth is LKR1200. Entrance to the Buddha Statue that overlooks the town is LKR200. Kandian Dance - A must visit. Showcases about 10 Sri Lankan dance forms and closes with people walking on live flames. This would cost you LKR500. But a must watch. Happens every evening at 5:30. Try and go early to get front row seats. The Pub - A very nice pub with good music. Think it is the only one in town. A very nice place not very far from the Temple of the Tooth. There are no motor bikes or bicycles for rent here. But you can explore the town on foot itself. More » « Hide

A very nice place to spend a weekend at. The service here is simply fantastic. That was really the highlight of our stay. The location, though far from the main town (6-7 kms) is awesome. Its in the middle of the farm where the surroundings are lush green. There were emus, guinea fowls, ducks, chickens, horses and even a peacock. The appearance of the farm stay by itself was not that great. The room which we stayed in was not that good. Very basic. Asbestos sheet ceiling with a fan. I think the rooms on the first floor are the same. So would recommend families and couples to try and stay in one of the rooms in the ground floor. Never saw them but I am certain they are better than the rooms on the first floor. If it is only friends travelling to Dandeli, then this place is perfect. A lot of activities to indulge in. the farm stay organise trekking, river rafting, river crossing, kayaking and rappling. Apart from that, you can play cricket, badminton, table tennis, caroms and there are cycles which I assume are given on rent. The food here is pretty awesome. We had chicken which was absolutely delicious. Just could not stop myself after I tasted it. The hosts here are super friendly and cater to every need. They ensure that everything is in place. Unlike some of the other places where I have stayed at where breakfast is served between fixed timings, here they served us breakfast even though it was past noon (we slept late :) ) Either ways, I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends travelling to Dandeli and if I go back to Dandeli with friends, I would definitely revisit this place. But due to the roads and taking a wrong turn, we reached Goa pretty late at night and decided to stay at Baga. Hate the place. Too crowded and very very commercial. Wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Anyways with regards to Joaquim Guest House, it is located in the main Baga street behind one of the many guesthouses located on the street. Quite difficult to find. A kid at one of the shacks informed us about this place. The location is good for people who want to party at Mambos or Titos. At walkable distance. Advantage is that its not on the main road. Its located behind another guesthouse. So its not very loud and there is not a lot of disturbance. Did not eat food here. I don't think they have a restaurant here and because of which i don't know if they have room service because we did not order anything here. But because it's Goa, I assume that there will be room service. More » « Hide

Went to Pondicherry on a bike trip and after reaching there we went to a couple of hotels looking for the right place. An auto driver there informed us about Sun Park hotel. Went there and the check in was a breeze. Saw the room and liked it a lot. Very comfortable and peaceful. The service here was pretty good and the location of the hotel was ok, just off the French Colon and less than a Kilometer from the main Promenade. There is a small restaurant on-site where you can get a quick bite, but for lunch or dinner, you need to go out or you could also order at the hotel and they will get the food for you from outside. The room was very well maintained and the service was quick. The only problem that we really faced was that whenever we ordered the food at the hotel, the service boys used to collect the cash upfront (which is ok) but at the time of delivery, they never produced the bill. And we had to go by what he said. Although not a real problem, they could really look into this. Apart from this, the hotel is centrally air conditioned. So we could not control the a/c temperature in the room and it can get pretty warm in Pondicherry. More » « Hide
