My husband and I have visited this place 3-4 times over the last 4 years of our marriage. This itself says a lot about how much we are in love with this place. I have not been able to find a place like Ahilya fort where I think I would love to visit again and again. The serenity, peace and tranquility of the narmada, the divine experience of seeing small oil lamps floating in the narmada every evening, the ringing of the temple bells from a far early morning, sounds of conch shells blowing, having your delicious breakfast served so beautifully while you look at the beautiful ghats, everything there transports you to a different time and age. Staying otherwise in a buzzing metro city, Maheshwar and Ahilya fort bring you the much required peace. The fort itself is very beautifully maintained. It has a very homely atmosphere. The food too is very delicious. The now rare handloom woven Maheshwari sarees is another piece of beauty you would find here.
The good deeds of Masaheb Ahilyadevi are reflected in the vibrations of the entire place.
My husband and I have stayed here during one diwali and it was sooo beautiful.. Even the small town of Maheshwar had an amazing charm. The old houses along the narrow streets of the small town were lit with oil lamps all over, a thing which has become a rare sight in Mumbai nowadays.
P.s. This is not the place if you are looking for modern day activities such as sports, games, t.v. and discs, etc. which are available in the usual 5-star hotels these days. Such things would polute the basic nature of the place.
