Kumbakonam is the oldest temple town I have ever seen.. its an absolute mystical treat, for soul-seekers. Most of the temples here are \'shiva\' temples, aged many thousands years.. each temple has a unique story behind it and the historical significance is explained through paintings on the walls inside the temple and described in ancient Tamil. The best part is that this temple town presents multiple facets of lord \'shiva\', each avatar standing for a specific human virtue.. these are \'not- so-popular\' temples.. but leave a powerful, intense experience, a sudden, jolted awakening to the primordial force.. temples like \'tirucherai\', \'tirukkaravasal\' & \'tirukkarugavoor\' are just in and around Kumbakonam and have unique, intense stories behind them.
