However, its location just 10km from the ruins of Hampi makes it a convenient and, more importantly, luxurious option compared to other hotels in the neighbourhood. The hotel is pretty new and looks lovely from the outside. The decor in the lobby and the restaurants is garish and mismatched, but don't let that put you off. The rooms are comfortable and well planned. The pool is lovely. The 24-hour restaurant had mainly buffet meals. There was also a choice of a la carte, but the staff went out of their way to make a special dish for us (at no extra cost) when we weren’t happy with the options on the buffet. Breakfast has a lot of choice. However, dinner options can get boring after 2 days. (Lunch was mostly eaten at Hampi). The room service menu was limited but good. Service is not perfect and borders on average overall. The air conditioning in our room didn't work well despite several calls and complaints. The minibar was not stocked until we called up and asked for it to be filled. And, we had a strange request at 10.30 pm one night, when the service personnel asked to come into our room to see if they could enter the adjacent room through the connecting door as there was a problem with the entrance lock and the guest couldn't open the door (of course, I shouldn’t really complain since they were just trying to help a weary fellow traveller)! All in all, it was an interesting experience. Certainly not perfect, but the beauty of the nearby world heritage site blurred out the small imperfections. More » « Hide

Those are the two words that immediately come to mind about the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. It certainly is the place to be if you have been to Singapore several times and want to experience something different. The highlight is, of course, the rooftop pool from where you can take in views of the city from dizzying heights (55th floor), while sipping a cocktail. And, there's no better place to head to after sundown to watch beautiful people than the rooftop bar, Ku de ta. If you want a date with lady luck, then the casino is a good bet (pun intended). I stayed with my family and friends for 2 nights in August. If there is one word that best describes this resort, it’s COZY. Located at a quiet location, a short drive from the entry to the Bandipur National Park, the resort has cottages set around a walkway with trees all around giving you a feel of being close to nature. A swimming pool adds a touch of familiarity for the city bred children. The rooms, which have been recently refurbished, are minimalist yet classy and comfortable. Food was all buffets, since we were on a package, but the variety was impressive. The resort has an activity room with table tennis, carom board and pool table – a perfect solution if the weather turns against you. Morning and evening safaris to the national park and trekking around the area are the two main activities for those who want a taste of the wilderness. We were not too lucky with animal sightings as the monsoon was still on when we visited – monkeys, langur, spotted deer and sambar. We also saw an elephant across the other side of the reservoir during the evening trek. Although the resort does not have a great view, compared to some others in the neighbourhood that offer vistas of the Nilgiri hills, it makes up for the shortfall with excellent service. Right from the stage of making the reservation to our requirements being met during our stay, everything was impeccable. I would recommend this for a relaxing vacation with a large group, a romantic break and a wildlife holiday option for those who don't want to rough it out. More » « Hide

I am yet to encounter a person who categorically dislikes a wildlife holiday; however, there are those who are prepared to rough it out and others who want a few luxuries even in the wilderness. For the latter category (which I shamelessly subscribe to as a parent of a city-bred kid) Cicada Bandipur is an excellent option. The rooms are large and clean, the furnishings bordering on sparse; but with the view of the Nilgiris from the porch and the lush greenery all around, you are not likely to notice the indoors except at night. The food, which is all buffet was fairly average (as buffets go) except for breakfast which had eggs and dosas to order along with cereal, idlis, vada, upuma, etc - a really large spread that would satisfy every palate. Lunch and dinner were beginning to get boring by the end of the second day and could have done with more variety. There is also an evening snack for the children, which comprised maggi noodles and French fries everyday. Needless to say, this went down very well with the young ones. Activities are plenty - besides the morning and evening safaris in the national park, there is trekking, nature walks, indoor games, a wildlife movie in the evening and bicycles to ride around the property, which is a blessing if you are travelling with active kids. There is also the cloud9 spa where you can indulge in rejuvenation while looking out to the beautiful scenery of the mountains. The swimming pool, was so small that it did not entice us to venture in, given the weather was cloudy with intermittent showers. It could have made a nice lounge pool in summer but for the fact that it has absolutely no shade cover. If I were to single out one point that makes Cicada special, then it would have to be their service. Although we had several issues while making our booking at the city office, once at the resort, the service was excellent. Right from the naturalist patiently answering every question we asked about the wildlife, even taking the time to show us photos and clips of a tigress and her cubs that had been spotted on previous safaris. The manager who talked to us over dinner about the safety arrangements for preventing animals from entering the premises at night; the chef coming out at every meal to enquire what the kids had eaten or for general feedback on the food and the housekeeping staff who responded in 5 minutes to our 11pm call for a toothbrush and toothpaste. I did not have the good fortune of spotting a tiger this trip, but if I were to go back to Bandipur to try my luck one more time, Cicada would definitely be on top of my list of accommodation options. As you drive up the steep road towards the reception, it gives the impression of an old Kerala palace – large, white walls, sloping tiled roofs, and wooden pillars and rafters. From the entrance lobby, the architecture of the inner courtyard along which the rooms are located is even more charming, with a large water feature reminiscent of an old temple pond, standing centre stage. The soothing sound of the fountains in the pond, the tropical greenery washed a brighter shade of green by the monsoon, the glimpses of the river through the coconut palms and the cool blue water in the clover shaped swimming pool, all add to the relaxing ambience. The rooms are pleasantly modern, with standard luxuries like cable TV, mini bar, shower cubicle, and hair dryer. There is also a touch of local Malabar crafts in the wooden furniture. Most rooms have a large terrace leading off it that overlooks the Chaliyar River. There are also cottages, which are situated closer to the river, but further away from the lobby and restaurants. There are three restaurants in the resort, besides the 24-hour room service. However, since it was off-season, only one was operational – Ottupura the multi cuisine restaurant. Adjoining it is a cocktail lounge overlooking the river. The food, overall, although not exceptional is good and you cannot go wrong if you order the local Malabar delicacies. In terms of recreation, there is an ayurvedic centre, swimming and indoor games like carom and table tennis, a gym, a children’s play area and on some evenings, cultural shows are held in the open-air amphitheatre set in the centre of the resort. We were lucky to see a kalaripayatu performance one evening, performed by a local troupe. Boating, fishing and sightseeing trips can be arranged to nearby tourist attractions. The highlight of our trip was a boat cruise with lunch on the Chaliyar River in a two-bedroom kettuvallam or houseboat. Travelling on a houseboat in Kerala is overdone, but the experience at Kadavu is to be cherished. This is because unlike other parts of Kerala where the backwaters are overcrowded with houseboats, in these parts, the resort has the only houseboat, which means that you have the entire river to yourself. The scenery is also much greener as the banks of the river are largely free from construction. Go to Kadavu for a taste of the relatively unspoilt North Kerala or just a relaxing weekend away from the city. More » « Hide
