This was a very urgent trip so had to get premium tatkal tickets. Sadly all tickets in all other trains had been sold out, even the premium ones. Had to go on a sleeper ticket by paying AC rates, premium tatkal you see. This January, 2015. Well, I was hurrying to CST as I thought I would be late. The train departs at 21:30 hours. I reached just 5 minutes before departure and was huffing and puffing. But, OMG, there was no sign of the train. No, it didn't leave. Actually it was late. Late? Very Late. at 0030 hours the train departed, 3 hours late from CST. It usually takes 38 hours and 15 minutes to reach Howrah. But this good fellow took close to 48 hours to reach. It was a terrible journey.

The only fastest train from Mumbai to Kolkata and it takes 26 hours with no stoppages so the passengers getting in and getting out is not there so no disturbance at all. In-house catering by IRCTC and bedding and towel are provided by IRCTC and is a boon for business traveller.

The train is normally on time. There is III AC and II AC which are quite comfortable and it passes through Nagpur but as there is no stoppages the train doesn't stop. The catering is good but still would prefer to carry home made stuff and fruits.

The fastest travel time from Mumbai to Kolkota by Duranto train is 26 hours with in house catering in the train and bedding with blankets specially in winter is a boon to business class passengers travelling at last minute and tickets available in Tatkal quota. Good normal food and best time to relax for 24 hours and prefer II AC which is more comfortable then III AC.

This train is almost always overbooked and there were 2 RAC passengers in our compartment making it 10 people for 8 seats. The AC 3 tier coach was worse than the sleeper coaches. It was dirty and smelly and was not cleaned regularly. The bathrooms were in very bad shape with blocked sink drains and no soap. It was seldom cleaned and was always wet and smelly. The only consolation was that there were some good stations on the route and we got some decent food.

Now the good part is - after Tatanagar, a particular tea vendor was selling his tea as "Khaaab se Kharaab chai" (worst tea) and it turned out to be one of the best tea (Ginger and Elaichi). I have had on train and even one of the better ones I have had anywhere.

The train left earlier than scheduled from Kharagpur Station (and we had stepped out to sample aloo dums) and we almost missed our train. We chased the train and boarded it after requesting the guard to stop.

Kolkata is a very colorful city with a unique blend of new and old world. Multi level flyovers, super fast metros and modern theme parks do not over shadow the old bridges, world architecture and memorials. Kolkata is simply a must visit for city lovers. Duranto Express is the best train to travel from Mumbai to Kolkata and it gives you haste less journey with very less stoppages. The coach and seats were quite comfortable and IRCTC had given very good service. Coach, toilets and dustbins were clean and coach attendants were very helpful.
