Jagat Retreat, Rajasthan

I needed a break after hectic weeks at office. But my asking order was tall. I wanted to go for very short period to a place, which should be away from the hustle and bustle of the city, not reachable by mobile, but not so far away from nearest town as to be totally cut off from civilisation, pleasant weather and good food etc.,etc. One of our friends had recommended Jagat Retreat near Udaipur to us. He had visited it in monsoon. So I was little sceptical about his recommendation of going there in summer. Summer in Rajasthan can be very severe. I made inquiries with several people and got uniform praise. I checked on the internet too. Website of Jagat Retreat is nothing to write home about; in fact it is rather misleading. I did not find any further information from the internet. But proximity to Udaipur & recommendation from various sources clinched the deal for me.

Jagat Retreat was everything that was promised to me. Perfect location, finger licking food, beautiful rooms, good service et al. It is situated outside Udaipur, near Sajjangarh, around 7 kms from famous Trident Hilton. Retreat is completely surrounded by mountains & situated next to a rivulet. Unfortunately rivulet did not have a drop of water. It is so perfectly situated that as soon as you come out of your cottage, you can start climbing hillocks. Hills are barren just now. But one can imagine how beautiful they must be during or after the monsoon. Location will be its strong point after the monsoon. Fortunately for us weather also turned out to be much better than expected. In fact it drizzled one day. Cool breeze constantly blew in the evening, making it enjoyable to sit outside.

Retreat was out of mobile range, it had no TV and newspaper was also a day old. Though I would have preferred at least newspaper to remain in touch with outside world!

Resort has 4 cottages with 2 bedrooms each. Each one has a nice verandah. The best thing I liked about the verandah is that it has two levels. One can sit in a covered portion during the day and enjoy cool breeze during evening by sitting in open to sky “Ota”/verandah. Rooms are tastefully decorated with period furniture. They had a big bay window with nice picture window and big mattress where two children can easily fit in. I particularly liked the flooring. It had a Kerala touch. Bathrooms were big and had all necessary fittings. Bathroom also had a dressing room. Only thing which I missed was a cupboard to hang clothes. This is important if you are staying long. Also I wonder why they are not using solar energy for heating the water. Everyday we had electricity load shedding from 7.30 to 10 in the morning. This was the time when hot water was required the most.

All cottages shared the front lawn. Cottages were also surrounded by nice trees like Mango, Almond etc. Once fully grown they will provide nice shade and privacy to the cottages - though it will also invite monkeys near the cottages, whom we could see in plenty on the premises.
All in all, it was nice experience. I will recommend it to anyone who prefers a quiet holiday.

Resort had a small restaurant. Our package included all meals. Every day we were asked about our preferences. We had a wide variety of food like north Indian, Rajasthani, Chinese, continental and simple khichadi-kadhi. All meals were very tasty and sumptuous. We particularly enjoyed minty buttermilk, Mango bafna and lemon juice. Food is very important in such resorts as you have nothing else to do but laze around and eat!! Staff really enjoyed serving us. Serving with smile was their motto. When my young nephew demanded north Indian food for all his meals, they provided him that without any hesitation.

Service was good, though little on the slow side. Staff was very friendly and always smiling. There were few gaps like one had to remind them about additional blankets, towels etc. for additional persons staying in the same room. Toiletries should have been replaced or refilled daily, which was not attended to. Also to get morning and afternoon tea on time was little difficult. They will tell you with smiling faces that as lunch went on till late, they overslept! But with their pleasing attitude one tends to forgive them such lapses.

Major drawback of this resort was lack of any kind of activities organized by the resort. As there is no T.V. & also as it is far from Udaipur, one spends more time at the resort and therefore it is necessary to have some kind of activities. Their website mentioned that they arrange safaris to nearby Sajjangarh sanctuary. But on inquiry we were told that they do not provide such facility. We were told that many birds visit this area and we were able to see many. We asked them to provide us with some knowledgeable guide who can identify the birds to us and give us some background about them. Unfortunately such a person was also not available. If they can provide this kind of facility it will attract many bird lovers to their resort. Swimming pool and small library will be welcome addition. Just providing cricket bats or carom boards are not enough. Fortunately for us their entire staff joined us for cricket match which proved to be great fun. Even the family Alsatian Devil and pet monkey Prince joined us in the fun.
