2010 - Of snowfalls and long weekends!

What does 2010 hold for holidays, and what has it already delivered?

Srinagar welcomed its first snowfall of the season as many parts of the northernmost reaches of India were covered in a blanket of white. It has indeed been a beautiful way to start the new year, with a holiday in the snowy mountains. This week, Vacationer looks at this, as well as the worrying prospect of fewer holidays in 2010. Are you looking forward to holidaying in 2010?

As usual, HolidayIQ members have shared their suggestions and experiences for planning a holiday around what children want.

2010 -WORK MORE, HOLIDAY LESS?

Have you put your new calendars up yet? Carefully looked through the list of holidays for this year? If you have, then you might have noticed that many of the national holidays this year fall on or around weekends.

As many as eight to ten holidays across India, including May Day, Ganesh Chathurti, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, and Christmas, fall on weekends. As a result of this, the number of government holidays you would get, will come down from about 17 or 18, to just around 8 or 10, depending on which state you live in.

In addition, there will be only two or three extended holidays in 2010 - Diwali (November 5), Muharram (December 17), and of course Good Friday (April 2).

What does this mean for travel plans? Vacationers are worried that this means they will be working more and holidaying less.

Are you worried that you will not be able to go on as many holidays as you would like? Or have you made your plans already? Share with us your stories!

FIRST SNOWFALL FOR THE YEAR IN SRINAGAR

Pic: Kanchan, Bangalore
Srinagar welcomed the New Year with its first snowfall of the season. Tourists and locals celebrated the end of a prolonged dry season. For many tourists, it was the thrill of experiencing snow for the first time.

The cold wave in the North has resulted in snowfall in many places of Jammu-Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh.

While this is indeed an exciting chance to experience snow, tourists are warned of the risks of the cold wave. Many in the region have lost their lives in the cold. The unfavourable weather conditions have also caused many roads in the states to be cut off, and flights to the region to be delayed or cancelled. Be sure to plan properly and pack lots of warm clothes so that you can truly enjoy your holiday in the snow!

Where to go for snow?

Head to Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Sikkim, and the Kashmir Valley if you want to see snow-capped peaks, icy lakes, snow-covered plains, and try your hand at winter sports.
