| About Chattisgarh |
Located in central India, the state of Chattisgarh was formed in the year 2000, carved out of the mainly tribal, southeastern parts of Madhya Pradesh. It shares its borders with Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh in the north, Andhra Pradesh in the south and Orissa in the east.
The northern and southern parts of the state are hilly, while the central part is a fertile plain. The mineral-rich area to the north is called the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. The central fertile plains, part of River Mahanadi basin, are known as the "Rice Bowl" of Central India. The southern part of the state lies in the Deccan Plateau that goes on to encompass most of southern India. Mahanadi and Indravati are the chief rivers of Chhattisgarh. The main industries are Steel, Aluminium and Cement, but the state is also known for its tribal handicrafts: woodcraft, bamboo craft, and bell metal work.
Forests rich with Teak, Sal, Bamboo, Sheeshal, Mahua cover 44% of Chhattisgarh and tribals such as Gond, Maria, Abujmaria, Halba, Dhurwa make up about one third of the population. Raipur is the capital as we well as commercial and financial hub of Chhattisgarh; it
holds the only airport in the state. Bastar is a southern district that
is predominantly forested and inhabited by tribal populations, and hold
many of Chhattisgarh's tourist attractions. Jagdalpur is the main city of ll as comtourist attractions. Jagdalpur is the main city of this region, a small town that can be easily explored on foot. Raipur
and Jagdalpur are convenient bases to explore the attractions of the
state, which are mainly to do with forest resources, natural sights and
tribal culture.
Chitrakote falls on the Indravati River and Tiratgarh waterfall near Jagdalpur, are spectacular sights. The 11th-century Bhoramdeo temple is called the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh because of its erotic sculpture, and is approachable from Raipur. The famous Danteswari Temple is in the southernmost district, Dantewada. Chhattisgarh has three National Parks and 11 Wildlife Sanctuaries.
