Revathi and Shankar from Mumbai, also explored the ancient Portuguese monuments in Daman, apart from enjoying its great beach life. They noticed that many young tourists arrived from Gujarat to enjoy a break at the sea-side, as well as to visit the many pubs of the city, since their own neighbouring state is a dry one.
A Portuguese colony for over 450 years, until it gained independence in 1961, Daman retains many influences of its colonial past. Two forts, several churches and old colonial bungalows are evidence of this past. Culturally Daman is a colourful mix of European and local traditions and the people are laid-back and friendly.
FortMotiDaman - the entire area of Moti Daman is enclosed within this fort thatwas built in 1559. It has impressive ramparts and gates and a moat linked to the DamangangaRiver.
