Shiv and Anne Menon of Hyderabad checked into a hotel in downtown Karol Bagh. They wanted to experience the rich culture and history of the city that has been the capital of several ruling dynasties.

One of the oldest cities in the world, Delhi was the stage for the great epic Mahabharata, and later became the capital of Muslim India between the 12th and 19th centuries. The old forts, mosques and monuments littering Old Delhi are a testimony to the grandeur of the Mughal era.

Highlights:

Lal Quila was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1648. The red sandstone walls of the imposing fort contain the remains of the Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Moti Masjid, and some elaborately designed gardens. Don't miss the popular sound and light show which narrates the history of Delhi.

Swatantra Sangram Sangrahalaya, within the Lal Quila, is a museum on the history of the independence movement in India, starting from the Mutiny of 1857 all the way to 1947.

Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques in Asia. This exquisite red sandstone and marble mosque is a fine example of Mughal architecture with its onion-shaped dome and tapering minarets. The top of the southern minaret affords a bird's eye view of Delhi.

Chandni Chowk - this famous market of Old Delhi is a chaotic and amazing criss-crossing of lanes and by-lanes that seem to stock everything under the sun, from spices and ittars, to jewellery and dress materials.

OTHER MOGHUL MONUMENTS:

Purana Qila - although strictly not in Old Delhi, this fortress is one of the major Moghul monuments. It was built by Emperor Humayun, and was captured and occupied by the Afghan chieftain Sher Shah Suri, who called it Shergarh.

Humayun's Tomb on Mathura Road is set amidst a garden and is believed to have influenced the design of the Taj Mahal.  This stunning red sandstone edifice was built by Humayun's widow in 1560.

Qutub Minar - Delhi's most recognized landmark is in Mehrauli (south Delhi) but is a must-see. This World Heritage Monument was built in 1199 by Qutbuddin Aibak as a victory tower. The soaring 230-foot minar is made of red sandstone and marble.
