| Buddhist Gompas In Lahaul Spiti | | | Lahaul-and-Spiti | This cold desert with frozen lakes and icy rock faces dotted with gompas or Buddhist monasteries is a world apart. This region is convenient to visit in July, since it never rains here, while the rest of India has monsoons. The smiling villagers who make a living in this menacing landscape, seem culturally much closer to Tibetans.
This remote valley is at a height of 2,70 m and is a high altitude desert. Keylong, the administrative headquarters is 117 km from Manali.
ATTRACTIONS - Kardang Monastery is 5 km from Keylong. It was built in the 12th century and has a wonderful collection of tangkhas, wall paintings, musical instruments, and weapons.
- Guru Ghantal
is believed to be the oldest monastery in Lahaul and is a wooden
pyramid-like structure. You can see the famous statues of Padmasambhava
here.
- Tabo Monastery - the most famous monastery of Spiti was built in the 11th century. The brilliant wall paintings depicting the life of Buddha are an art lover's delight.
Key Monastery founded in the 13th century is the largest monastery in Spiti and is famous for its tangkhas or wall hangings.
