Raj and Madhu Arora, sons Rohit and Jeet, and senior Mr Arora, drove to Shimla from Delhi in the summer holidays to escape the heat.

The beautiful little state, rightly named “Land of the Snows” was like a breath of fresh air from big city life. The winding mountain roads, deodar trees, streams and meadows and little British cottages were like a picture book - quite different from the menacing peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas they had seen on their trip to Kedarnath the year before.

Since they had the luxury of their own vehicle, they drove from one delightful hill-station to another and halted each night. The distance from one destination to another was never more than half a day’s drive, and the well-maintained Himachal roads made things easier.
Hill Station Experience
Kasauli

If you want to see what an original British hill-station was like, with all the peace and tranquillity surrounding it, this is the place.

A beautiful Mall Road with a church and open square with shops around it, dominate this town.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITES
  • Below and the River Sutlej.
  • Christ Church built by the British inhabitants of Kasauli 150 years ago.
  • Lawrence School Sanawar a living example of a typical British residential school with its stone building and beautiful chapel.
  • Hikes and picnics walk up the Mall to Monkey Point; or if you can do a steeper walk go up to Baba Balak Nath temple the views from there are splendid.
Chail
This hill station is probably the only one not built by the British, and so it does not have a Mall Road! Instead the central point is the Patiala Maharaja?s Palace, now converted into a heritage resort.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITES
  • Walks in the thick deodar and oak forests
  • Hike to Kandaghat, although its 20 km, you can try the hilly shortcuts
  • Sidh Baba Mandir
  • Worlds highest cricket ground
  • Fishing in the Gaura river
  • Chail Wildlife Sanctuary a small reserve forest with barking deer, bear, ghoral, jungle fowl and a variety of pheasants. The HPTDC takes guided tours within the sanctuary.

Kufri
Known as the Switzerland of India Kufri is Himachal's skiing destination. It is also an ideal little hill-station to relax in and go for walks and treks. You can make a day-trip to here from Shimla or Chail.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITES
  • Skiing and tobogganing
  • Pony or a yak ride in Indira Tourist Park
  • Horse ride or hike to Mahsu Peak for great views
  • Himalayan Nature Park.

Shimla
Once the Queen of hill stations, Shimla has now become overcrowded and wears a tired look. However, it's charm still lies in its colonial architecture and memories of the past.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITES
  • The Ridge, a wide, open space with panoramic views of the Shivalik Range, it is the heart of Shimla.
  • Annandale, just 2 km below the Ridge, is a rolling green valley and a pleasant change from the perpetual slopes above.
  • The Mall, a shopper's paradise, is a 7-km stretch of road just below the Ridge and has some of the best shopping in Shimla.
  • Christ Church was constructed in 1846 and is the second-oldest church in India. Its stained-glass windows are a major attraction.
  • Jakhu Mandir, dedicated to Hanuman, the temple is on the highest peak in Shimla.
  • Viceregal Lodge - this was the summer residence of the viceroys of India. It is now called Rashtrapati Niwas and houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies.
  • Hiking is a pleasure in the Shimla hills; some of the favourite spots are The Glen, Annandale, Summer Hill, Chadwick Falls and Prospect Hill.

Manali
Manali's magic lies in its snow-capped peaks, the mighty River Beas, ancient temples, rolling meadows and quaint villages. As the northern-most town in the Kullu Valley, it is the gateway to such faraway places as Leh, Lahaul and Spiti.

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITES
  • Hadimba Temple built in 1533 AD, is situated in a thick deodar forest about 2.5 km from the town.
  • Manu Temple, 3 km from the main bazaar in old Manali, is said to be the only temple of Manu in India.
  • Arjun Gufa is the cave where Arjun is believed to have meditated for the weapon of Lord Indra. The cave is situated near Prini village, 4 km towards Naggar, and is a good half-day excursion
  • Vashisht Village, 3 km from Manali on the banks of the River Beas, this village is famous for its hot water springs and a temple dedicated to Lord Rama and Vashisht Muni.
Outdoor Activities - trekking, heli-skiing, fishing, rafting, paragliding and hiking, are pursued with a passion in Manali.
