| The Hariharans of Bangalore are a regular wildlife watching family they take turns in visiting all of Karnataka's National Parks, whenever they get some time off.
The Nilgiri Biosphere is a continuous stretch of tropical rainforest, found in the Western Ghats, and stretching across Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It has many important National Parks, and the famous parks of Karnataka are Nagarhole and Bandipur.

| Wildlife | | | Nagarhole | |
This is Southern India's leading wildlife sanctuary, and it has almost everything you could ask for. The thick forests are made more beautiful by the presence of three rivers and the large Kabini Lake, turning this sanctuary into a lush green haven abounding with wildlife. The larger animals seen in Nagarhole are elephants, tigers, leopards and gaurs. There are also deer, such as chital, sambar, chousingha and barking deer. Langoors and other monkeys, abound, and the wild dog or dhole is famous in this area. Because of the waterbodies, Kabini is also famous for its birdlife.
This beautiful sanctuary was the hunting reserve of the Mysore Maharajas and was turned into a National Park soon after Independence. You can explore it in the Forest Department mini-buses or in your own vehicle, provided you have permission and are accompanied by a guide. The half-an-hour elephant safaris organised by the Forest Department are also an exciting experience.

Most of the wildlife holiday activity centres around the Kabini reservoir and river. Further south in Tamil Nadu is the Mudumalai sanctuary divided from Bandipur by the Moyar River. The gorge formed by the Moyar River, the dense green forests, and the picturesque Niligiri Mountains in the background, make this a beautiful location.
The area around Kabini is the best from the point of view of the setting and the abundant wildlife and birds. The wide riverbed floods annually and when the water recedes there is lush green grass for miles. The large herds of elephants and gaur can be seen feeding in the grasslands. If you access Kabini from the Nagarhole side you can travel by boat down the river. At a few points in the park there are watchtowers towering over the bamboo forests they are so high up that the elephants and gaur look like small lego blocks dotting the landscape. You can also see many kinds of deer, monkeys, wild dogs, and rarely the tiger and leopard.
