SANCHI One of the
best-known Buddhist sites in India,
Sanchi flourished from the 3rd century BC to 7th century AD, spanning the
entire range of the development of Buddhism. This huge complex of monasteries,
stupas and other buildings is a UNESCO world heritage site and has been
extensively restored by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Highlights
Great Stupa One of the finest stupas in India, this was
built in the 2nd century by Emperor Ashoka. It has four ornate gates or
toranas, which are richly carved with scenes of life in those days, and stories
and legends from Buddha's life.
Stupa No. 3 is another smaller, but impressive
stupa. It has the relics of two on Buddha?s closest disciples.
Monastery 51 is the best-preserved vihara and has a pillared courtyard with living quarters for monks.
Temple No. 17 is one of the oldest stone temples
in India
and its style of architecture was followed by many temples in later years. | | |
