Wildlife lover Supriya Seth had always wanted to see the elegant sangai, a deer famed for walking on water. She visited LoktakLake, one of the main habitats of this deer.
Much of the eco-system of Manipur is made up of low-lying lakes, rivers and islands. South of Imphal is the spectacular LoktakLake where local fishermen live on small islands formed by dense reeds. A large part of the lake is the Keibul Lamjao National Park that is home to the rare brow-antlered deer, locally known as the sangai. It's a unique experience to see these dainty-footed deer skimming over the water and reeds. The SendraIsland in the middle of the lake is a bird sanctuary.
You need travel permits to go here, and they can be obtained from the Manipur Tourism Office, or through any local travel agent. Foreigners have to get their permits from the Foreigner Registration Office near the GPO Imphal.
