Meghalaya Hill Station Experience - Shillong

Send this page to a friend
Lata and Suresh Vishwanathan, and their kids, went to Shillong for a laid-back hill-station holiday to escape the sweltering heat of Kolkata in June.

Hill Station Experience
Shillong

This idyllic hill-station often referred to as Scotland of the east. It is steeped in British nostalgia and is surrounded by pine forests, streams and waterfalls.

Highlights:

  • Ward Lake - this area around Shillong's main lake has lovely colonial bungalows, churches, gardens and wooded walks.
  • Police Bazar - this is the crowded bustling marketplace that has the main shopping centres, Tibetan restaurants and many interesting local handicrafts and woolen stalls.
  • State Museum - visit this state museum to see an interesting display of tribal costumes and folk art.
  • Lady Hydari Park - this beautiful landscaped park also has a mini-zoo, deer park, and forestry museum.
  • Anglican cemetery - take a walk in this pleasant churchyard surrounded by pine trees to see many interesting graves of former British residents and soldiers killed in war.
  • Beadon Falls, Bishop Falls and Elephant Falls are three popular scenic spots where you can drive down for a picnic.
