Mr and Mrs Sen from Kolkata visited Nagaland as they wanted to see a truly remote area of the Northeast. They spent a pleasant vacation in the two main cities of the state, and decided not to venture into the interiors as it was not considered too safe.
Although it has an ancient history, Dimapur is now a busy commercial city and is the gateway to Nagaland and Manipur. It is a major station and has an airport.
Highlights:
Ruins of the KachariKingdom right in the middle of the town, you can see the remnants of this
ancient dynasty that ruled Nagaland before the Ahom invasion in the 13th century.
Megaliths these are around 30 impressive carved stone megaliths, believed to be ancient fertility symbols.
Ruzaphema Bazar this is about 5 km down on the road to Kohima. You can pick up a variety of genuine tribal handicrafts and wollens here.
Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary this little wildlife sanctuary is a 37km drive from Dimapur. You can
see many animals here like the hoolock gibbon, mithun, flying squirrel,
elephants, barking deer, goral, tiger and sloth bear. Among birds are
kaleej pheasant and great hornbill.
Tourism- Nagaland - Nagaland is famous for its rich mosaic of numerous tribes with their rich culture. Agriculture and animal husbandry, including poultry, are the main occupations of the Nagas.
