While visiting Amritsar, Mandy and Bobby Singh of Birmingham, also decided to experience some of Indias patriotic past. They wanted to re-live the great sacrifice Indias freedom fighters had made for the country's independence.
Jallianwallah Bagh - everyone knows of the infamous spot, a short distance away from the GoldenTemple, where General Dyer ordered the gunning down of hundreds of patriotic Indians who had gathered to demand independence from British rule. Now it is a memorial park and you can still see the well with bullet marks, where hundred of people jumped in. A martyr's gallery displays photographs and newspaper clippings of the event.
Wagah Border - this is the checkpost on the India-Pakistan border, 9km from Amritsar. Each evening soldiers from both countries do the ceremonial march and lower their countries flags. This sight is watched by hundreds of tourists. Wagah border has come to stand as a reminder of the India-Pakistan partition, which caused many political and social repercussions later on.
The Golden Temple(Harmandir Sahib) - The Golden temple of Amritsar, known as swarn mandir or swarna mandir, located in Punjab, is the famous pilgrimage place for sikhs in India.
Imagining Punjab in the Age of Globalization - Though Punjab was reorganised as a separate state of independent India on the basis of language, it is often seen as a land of the Sikhs, despite the fact that Hindus and Muslims were in larger numbers in the region.
