To avoid the sweltering heat of Chennai, Girish and Anna, along with their small kids and ayah, escaped to the cool climes of Coonoor for a relaxing break.

Hill Station Experience
Ooty
Fondly called the Queen of the hill stations, this popular holiday spot in the Nilgiris has gorgeous views, old British bungalows and churches, a sprawling botanical garden with exotic flowers and plants, and a pretty lake for boating. In short it is the ideal summer holiday destination for families. If you want to avoid the crowds during peak season (which can be quite bad), go in the off-season, from March to May. The drive to Ooty is an enjoyable one along the Mysore-Ooty Highway and Mudumalai National Park. You can shop for Nilgiri tea, delicious chocolates and fudge, and the famous eucalyptus oil
Coonoor

Another pretty hill-station developed in the Nilgiris by the British, Coonoor is surrounded by the beautiful Blue Mountains with patches of 'shola' forest, and miles of tea plantations growing on the hill slopes. There are many bungalow resorts within the tea plantations, steeped in British nostalgia. Coonoor also offers cosy home stays that have become quite popular. A delightful way to reach Coonoor is by the quaint mountain railway that starts from Ooty. You can even just go for a ride in it to Ooty and back - it just takes 60 minutes one way. Sim's Park is a beautiful garden made by the British that has winding paths, resting places, a rose garden and lily pond. It has a collection of exotic trees and plants from all over the world. Other tourist highlights are Lamb's Rock, Law's Falls and Dolphin's Nose from where you get awesome views.

Kodaikanal

This hill-station is famous for its International School and for its association with the American missionaries. It is a favourite destination for honeymooners and families. At the centre of the town is a star shaped man-made lake around which there are various fun activities. For great views go up Coaker's Walk that takes you to an observatory on the mountain top. Opposite is the horticultural garden called Bryant's Park. A spectacular sight is the Pillar Rocks that are huge vertical columns of rock, 400 ft high. The Silver Cascade is a spectacular waterfalls 7 km away from the town.
