The Senguptas of Kolkata had relatives living in Tripura – they were going to visit them and then all go across to Bangladesh to re-discover their ancestral home.
Culturally and geographically Tripura resembles West Bengal and Bangladesh, rather than the other North East states. Agartala is a quiet city with the main government offices of the state.
Highlights:
UjjayantaPalace - this imposing white mansion was built in 1902 and is now the Legislative Assembly. Tourists can see its flamboyantly decorated interiors when Assembly is not in session.
Jagannath temple - this is located within the grounds of the Palace. Across the gardens is the Ummaneshwar temple.
TribalMuseum - this has an interesting display of tribal artifacts and costumes.
StateMuseum - there are several ancient archaeological remains on display at this museum.
Kamala Sagar - this is a beautiful lake about 27km from Tripura. There is a Kali temple with a 12th century Durga deity here.
Sepahijala Nature Reserve - this small wildlife sanctuary has a lake, mini-zoo and horticultural park. You can see hoolock gibbons and the spectacular golden langur in the wild.
Places of Interest - Tripura has beautiful rock cut carvings and stone images at Unakoti, Devtamura and Pilak. During November every year, the unique Orange & Tourism festival is celebrated in the Jampui hills.
Tripura History - The history of Tripura is very old. It dates back to the era of the Mahabharata. The name of the Tripura was mentioned in the the above epic along with the states like Manipur, Kamrup (Assam) etc.,
