The father and son duo, Dr Vivek Sengupta and Vikram Sengupta, set off on a trek to the Valley of flowers – they had two purposes in mind – some serious trekking along with some serious photography.

Trekking
Uttaranchal

The Kumaon and Garhwal region have several good treks, ranging from the simple to the advanced level. The Uttaranchal hills are rich in flora and fauna, and have scenic routes with beautiful forests, lakes, rivers and meadows. Trekking is the most pleasurable way to explore the Himalayas.

  • Milam Glacier - The beautiful Gori Ganga river starts from the Milam glacier high up near the Tibetan border. This trek starts in the small town of Munsiyari in Pithogarh district and takes around 10-15 days at a leisurely pace.
  • Pindari Glacier - The awesome glacier lies between the Nanda Devi and Nabda Kot. You start the trek from Song village, beyond the temple town of Bagshwar. It is a difficult 50 km trek and takes around two weeks up and down.
  • Valley of Flowers - Between the months of June and September this National Park is a riot of colours, filled with rare Alpine flowers. The Park starts 20 km beyond Joshimath and you can spend days in it trekking and photographing. It takes 3 days to trek from Govindghat to the Park.
  • Dodital - This is an exquisite lake high up at 3,024 m, and surrounded by dense forests. The trek is 23 km long and starts from Kalyani, in Garhwal, past the Asi Ganga River.
  • Gaumukh - A popular trek that takes you to the actual mouth of the Ganga. You have to cross the Gangotri glacier and walk through the beautiful meadows of Tapovan and Nandanvan. It is a moderate trek that takes three days.
  • Nanda Devi National Park - This Park suffered so much in the hands of tourists and trekkers, that the government had closed it down for the past 20 years. Since 2004 it has been partially opened for trekking again - and has some exhilarating walks up to Dharansi and Debrugheta. Permits are available at Joshimath and you have to drive up to Lata or Tolma villages, from where you get porters and guides to accompany you into the Nanda Devi National Park.
