The Subramaniam family of Trichur have close friends in Kolkata and decided to take up their invitation to spend Durga Puja with them. This is the time when the city is buzzing with festivities, fun and good food.

Bengali Heritage
Kolkata

The Howrah Bridge over the Hooghly River, leftist slogans painted on every wall, trams snaking their way through the jungle of traffic, old Victorian buildings rubbing shoulders with new apartment blocks; vocal teenagers discussing politics, music and football at every street corner that is Calcutta for you sorry Kolkata as the Bengalis would have you say. This city draws you from the midst of its decay and chaos, with welcoming arms into a warm embrace that leaves you with friends for life and a taste for good food, good adda, and a passion for culture the basis of every Bengali's existence.

Highlights:

  • BBD Bagh - This is the main administrative and commercial hub of the city. The old colonial buildings which once housed the British government and corporate offices remain very much the same, except that the Sahibs have been replaced by Indians now. You can shop for old books, movies and music here, eat the street food and then head for New Market, the most famous market of Kolkata.
  • Chowringhee - Once an elegant boulevard that ran past the green Maidan, this is now a main artery of the city. From here you turn into Park Street, the place for fine dining and fashionable shopping. This entire area is decorated with much fanfare during Christmas and New Year.
  • Indian Museum - this is the largest and oldest museum in India. It has a fascinating collection ranging from an Egyptian mummy to Gandhara and Chandela sculpture, Pala bronzes, miniature paintings, Buddhist sculptures and manuscripts, and much more.
  • Victoria Memorial - A grand monument built by the loyal British subjects for their great queen, this marble palace is worth seeing for its grandeur. It has galleries filled with colonial paintings and sculptures, and Raj memorabilia.
  • Kalighat temple - This is the most holy temple in Kolkata where people have come to worship since the middle ages.
  • Jorasanko - This is the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore and his illustrious forefathers. It gives you a glimpse into the lives of this leading family of Kolkata that shaped much of its cultural and intellectual spirit. The Rabindra Bharati University is also within its compound.
  • Marble Palace - Known to Bengalis as Mullick Bari, this mansion was built by the millionaire Rajendra Mullick. It is a wonderful showcase of the lives of the 19th century gentry and has flamboyant banquet halls, Italian chandeliers, Ming vases, more than 100 types of marble in its floors, antique furniture and paintings, and a quaint aviary with exotic parrots.
AROUND KOLKATA

DAKSHINESHWAR - This is the temple on the banks of the Hooghly (12 km from Kolkata) where the holy sage Ramakrishna Paramhans lived and worshipped. Thousands of pilgrims come here everyday to see the Kali temple where he spent most of his time, and his simple room that is preserved in its original state. Close to the temple is the Belur Math - the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda who was Ramakrishna's main disciple and a great philosopher himself.

SHANTINIKETAN - The idealistic university set up by Rabindranath Tagore is in the countryside of Birbhum district, 213 km from Kolkata. Tagore left a deep impression on this institution and it is still run on the lines of his great vision and philosophy. It is a centre of music, dance, art and sculpture, and you can also see the Gurudev's living quarters, which is now a museum, dedicated to him.
