| Terracotta Temples | | | West-Bengal | There is a group of unique temples made out red terracotta in Bankura district, 150 km from Kolkata. They were built during the Mallabhumi Dynasty in the 17th century. These elaborately decorated temples have a unique architecture, with domed roofs resembling a thatched hut. The walls are elaborately decorated with scenes from Krishna's life and the Ramayana. Elaborate temples and halls with pillars, minarets, arches and gates have all been made out of this baked earth that has stood the test of time.
The Shyama Raya temple built in 1643 is the most famous among several smaller temples. Other temples that should be seen are the Rasa Mancha Temple, Keshto Raya temple, Madan Mohan Temple and Sridhar Temple. | | |
